About the logo

Recognition of the unique quality of Christchurch - its sense of identity, place and history, is dependent on our awareness and understanding of Christchurch heritage.

Promotion of heritage is one of the key factors in developing this community awareness of the distinction that makes Christchurch unique.

The direct identification of significant heritage buildings, places and objects and also of heritage initiatives is seen as vital for an immediate, continuing recognition and promotion of Christchurch Heritage for both the community and for visitors.

A Christchurch Heritage logo has been created as this promotional tool.

It is important that this logo is representative of Christchurch Heritage and not just one architectural period. It should be seen to serve the whole community and not one particular heritage interest.

The logo design focuses on a leaf motif, which is repeated in many architectural styles both in capitals and in decorative friezes and details. The leaf motif can also be identified with heritage places and objects.

To maintain the value of the logo, the use must be associated with our most important Christchurch heritage features. In general, this means buildings, places and objects identified in the Christchurch City Plan or in the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Register.

The logo is being used for heritage plaques, heritage trails, signage and banners, promotional items, heritage information and stationary.

If all significant heritage items in the City can be associated with the logo, then the community, in time, will come to recognize the value and significance of the heritage inheritance, which we all must understand, respect and value in sustaining that vital sense of a unique Christchurch.

The logo is a registered trademark of the Christchurch City Council. It is intended for publication without charge for all appropriate purposes relating to Christchurch heritage. The criteria and approved formats of the logo are available on application to the Urban Design and Heritage Team.
