Christchurch Overview History Project

Background

This report is a history of Christchurch that looks at the city in themes such as life in the city, the built city, industry and commerce. It will help us to identify future heritage items that represent the unique identity of the people and place for protection under the Christchurch City Plan.

The report also forms an important first step that will guide the further identification of heritage buildings, places and other aspects of our history that contribute to the city identity. It also forms the first stage in the overview of the Christchurch City Plan heritage list.

Public comments were sought on the draft report for four weeks over March and April 2005. We thank you for your input into the process. These comments will be collated and passed onto the consultants for inclusion in the final report.

Once finalised, hopefully by the end of May 2005, the final history report will be accessible from this website. You will also be able to borrow a copy of the report through Christchurch City Libraries.
