Urban design

Cathedral Square, Christchurch, New Zealand

What is urban design and why do we value it?

Cities are dynamic places that are constantly evolving and changing as a result of social, environmental and economic factors and Christchurch City is no exception.

Developments of the past fifty years (in particular) indicate the importance of focusing on design when planning and managing the City. Urban design identifies and helps enhance the City character and image while planning for the future.

Urban design respects the past and provides for the future. People, Places and Spaces: a design guide for urban New Zealand1 describes urban design as; "about making the connections between people and places, between public and private space, between the natural and built environment, between movement and urban form, and between the social and economic purposes for which urban space is used."
