Safer routes to school

To travel smarter to and from school is to travel safely by more sustainable ways than the family car.

Active travel is good for children. They benefit from the exercise and they enjoy the social contact and opportunities to explore their world that active travel often provides.

To assist families to switch from driving to school to walking, scooting or cycling to school, the Christchurch City Council helps with the establishment of walking school buses and the development of school travel plans.

The Council also runs or supports programmes that encourage active travel to school at least once a week such as the national Feet First Walk to School Every Week, building upon the local Walk or Wheel Wednesdays Class Challenge and Cycle Safe.

Road safety provides information on programmes aimed at educating and encouraging good driving habits around schools and neighbourhoods.

For the full range of road safety projects and programmes undertaken by the Christchurch City Council see the Christchurch Road Safety Strategy.
