Bus signals
What are B-signals?

Example of a B-signal

Example of a pre-signal
A B-signal can be used at a signalised intersection where there is a bus lane. The B-signal activates when it detects a bus in the bus lane and provides the bus with a head start over traffic when the green light starts.
Where a bus lane ends before the intersection and the bus shares a lane with a turning movement (typically a left turn), a left turn arrow can operate in conjunction with the B-signal to clear any traffic queued ahead of the bus.
Advantages of B-signals
- Reduces corridor time for buses.
- Increases traffic flow, in conjunction with bus lanes.
- Merges traffic streams efficiently and safely.
What are pre-signals?
Pre-signals enable buses to go to the front of the queue at traffic lights. An extra set of traffic lights with a special bus signal is installed about 50 metres before the intersection to hold other traffic back while buses go to the front.
