Annual Bedding Display

Formal and spectacular spring and summer bedding displays have been a feature of the Armstrong Lawn since the late 19th Century when such displays were at their height in landscape fashion during the Victorian era.

Prior to development, this area like others in the Gardens, consisted of low sand hills and extensive shingle beds. In the 1870’s and 1880’s shingle was excavated to assist in the creation of roading for the city’s inner streets.

In 1997 the restored Peacock Fountain was sited amongst the bedding display.

Annual plants represent a significant group of plants who complete their life cycle within one year. Biennials, herbaceous perennials and standardised shrubs are also used in the displays providing additional colour, height, form, texture and scent.
