Christchurch wastewater
Christchurch's wastewater is mainly domestic sewage (from kitchen, bathroom, laundry and toilets) and a smaller proportion of industrial and commercial discharges.
If the pipes were laid end to end they would reach all the way to Cape Reinga in the North Island. We seldom give a thought to where all the wastewater goes, let alone how it actually gets there.
Here you will find information on the wastewater and sewer systems for Christchurch and surrounding bay areas.
The Christchurch City Council maintains these systems under the Wastewater Asset Management Plan and localised strategies to provide the community with a safe and healthy environment through the appropriate treatment and discharge of its wastewater.
The Council also governs the safe disposal and treatment of commercial and contaminated wastewater, known as trade waste.
