Animal Control fees
Animal Control services operate independently of rates – all operating costs come from registrations and fees of animal ownership. These fees pay for the many services offered including Animal Control Officers, micro-chipping of dogs, education programmes and the operation costs of the Animal shelter, which houses stray dogs and impounded livestock.
Remember if you own a dog and qualify for Responsible Dog Owner Status, you can get discounted registration renewal fees.
The Dog Control Act 1996 sets the infringement fees for various breaches of the Act, which the Animal Control Officers can issue in situations where these infringement offences create problems for the public and/or other animals including native wildlife.

Dog Control Policy and Bylaw
Known as the Garden City, Christchurch is made up of many beautiful parks, reserves and foreshores – many with significant amenity, recreation and wildlife values which need special protection. Part of this protection is managed through dog control regulations, governed by the Christchurch City Council.
The Dog Control Act 1996 is the national legislation which governs the regulations set by the Christchurch City Council to manage locally.
The Dog Control Policy 2008 outlines how the Council meets the requirements of the Act through the Animal Control team and the Dog Control Bylaw 2008 [PDF 85KB] provide the means for the enforcement services to support the Policy – such as controlled exercise areas and number or dogs allowed on a property.
