Solar water heaters

To apply for a building consent for a solar water heater, please fill out a completed application (Form B-001) and application checksheet (Form B-112), listed below.

Application for building consent for specific small works (Form B-001):

Council subsidy

If you want to install a solar water heater, the Council currently subsidises the total fee by $200. The subsidy is deducted from the $550 deposit fee at the time of lodgement, which equates to a $350 deposit fee payable on application.

The Council has introduced the subsidy to encourage residents to use energy-saving systems. It is one of 28 initiatives in the Sustainable Energy Strategy for Christchurch 2008–18. The subsidy is funded by the sale of carbon credits, gained by using gas from the Burwood Landfill to power QEII Park Recreation and Sport Centre. The subsidy is not funded by rates and is subject to review.

Fees

The overall cost of a building consent for solar water heating is calculated when the consent processing is completed. The final fee includes processing time charged, inspection fees, and fees for issuing a code compliance certificate once the building work has been inspected. Any additional fees are payable when the applicant uplifts the building consent.
