Median Age
The median age, or the point at which half the population is older and half younger, is a particularly useful summary of a population's age distribution.

Under 5 Years
There are higher concentrations of residents aged under 5 years in inner suburban locations surrounding the four avenues. The exception to this is areas around Riccarton.

5 to 14 Years
Higher density areas of children aged between 5 and 14 years are dispersed throughout all urban areas of the city, except for the Central City.

15 to 24 Years
There are high densities of young dults in inner suburban and Central City locations. There are also higher densities of 15 to 24 year old residents in areas around the Canterbury University and Christchurch Teachers College. Many of these areas are characterised by higher levels of rental accommodation and non-family households.

25 to 44 Years
There are higher concentrations of residents aged 25 to 44 years in inner suburban and Central City locations.

45 to 64 Years
Densities of the 45-64 year age group is dispersed throughout urban areas in Christchurch.

65 Years and Over
Meshblocks with high concentrations of people aged 65 years and over are dotted throughout the city.

Maori Ethnic Group
Higher densities of Maori residents are located in the east and south-eastern areas of the city.

Pacific Islanders Ethnic Group
Higher densities of Pacific Islanders are located in areas east and south west of the city.

Asian Ethnic Group
Higher densities of Asians are located in the Central City and in the north-west, particularly in areas close to the Canterbury University and Christchurch Teachers College.
