The Christchurch City Council’s Major Sewer Upgrade is necessary to reduce wastewater overflows into the Avon and Heathcote rivers during wet weather and to support anticipated growth in the south and south-west of Christchurch provided for in the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy.
The upgrade includes several large wastewater projects over 15 years, including wastewater pipelines, pump stations, pressure mains, and a wet weather wastewater storage facility, at a cost in excess of $150 million.
Several of these projects, the ones which aim to reduce wet weather wastewater overflows into the Heathcote River, have already been completed. Also recently completed was the Western Interceptor Stage 1 (WI 1) at a cost of approximately $6 million.
The capacity of the upgraded wastewater system will match the capacity of the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant.
