Fendalton Duplication

Work progressing well on Fendalton Duplication

Work is progressing well on the Fendalton Duplication project, part of the Christchurch City Council’s Major Sewer Upgrade, and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The work is a few months behind the revised schedule as a result of the continuing earthquakes and aftershocks which have affected ground conditions and seen resources diverted to assist with emergency repairs throughout the city.

The Fendalton Duplication is part of the 15-year programme of wastewater projects by Council, costing more than $150 million, which with the Western Interceptor will help reduce the frequency of wastewater flowing into the Avon River during wet weather and support growth in Christchurch’s west and south-west.

Two kilometres of pipeline is being trenched from Deans Avenue, near the closed section of Blenheim Road, north to Fendalton Road where it is being run along the main arterial to connect with the newly constructed Pumping Station and through to the intersection of Fendalton Road with Holmwood Road.

Work is currently happening on three fronts of the Fendalton Duplication:

  • at the southern end of Deans Avenue by the old roundabout with Blenheim Road where pipes are being laid
  • in Deans Avenue on the south side of the Riccarton Road roundabout where a manhole is being constructed
  • in Fendalton Road near the Harper Avenue/Deans Avenue intersection where pipes are being laid and a manhole constructed.

The Council acknowledges the disruption which this work has caused for motorists and residents and asks for their continued patience as the project is completed during the next eight months. Every effort is being made to keep all disruption to a minimum.

Motorists advised to consider alternate routes
Motorists are advised to consider using alternative routes in coming weeks to avoid delays particularly at the Riccarton Road roundabout when the pipeline connection is built across the roundabout starting in early July and when the same happens at Fendalton Road/Harper Avenue/Deans Avenue intersection from late June 2012.

These connections and some final laying of pipe along Deans Avenue will complete the project.

When completed, the Fendalton Duplication will connect into the Western Interceptor Stage 2 project, which has been tunnelled under St Asaph Street and through South Hagley Park. This project is scheduled for completion later this year (2012).
