Rugby World Cup 2011

In November 2006, the New Zealand Rugby Union won its bid to host Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 in New Zealand.

It was the biggest and most successful sporting event ever held in New Zealand and ran over six weeks from September 9th to October 23rd 2011.

Following the magnitude 6.3 earthquake on the 22 February and subsequent damage to AMI Stadium, the central city and various accommodation providers, the five pool matches that were allocated to Christchurch were relocated to other New Zealand cities.

To ensure Christchurch residents and visitors still felt part of the RWC 2011 action, the Council hosted a Fanzone at the Christchurch Events Village in North Hagley Park to create an atmosphere as close to the real thing as possible.

The free to attend Fanzone included the Council’s large inflatable dome, two big screens, a mini rugby field, grandstand style seating and an entertainment area.

The Fanzone was operating for the entire Tournament and every match (all 48 of them) was screened live. Three Community Fanzones were also held, which saw large screens and Rugby activity taken out to the eastern suburb communities that were most affected by the February 22 earthquake.

You can find out more about the activity the Christchurch City Council rolled out by visiting our Rugby World Cup 2011 regional website.
