The Christchurch City Council has a Disability Advisory Group (DAG) that meets monthly at the Civic Offices in Tuam St. It helps the Council to achieve Goal 2 (Consultation and Decision Making) of the Council’s Equity and Access Policy.

Purpose
The purpose of the Disability Advisory Group is “to provide a forum for people with disabilities to participate in the planning of Council services, projects and activities in order to ensure that the needs of the wider disability community are taken into account.”
Role
The role of the Disability Advisory Group is to:
- Advise and work with all Council staff to review and facilitate the implementation of the Equity and Access Policy for people with disabilities and all other related policy relevant to people with disabilities.
- Advise on the most useful ways of communicating and consulting with the wider disability community.
- Provide feedback and advice on planning, reviewing or the implementation of Council activities (projects and services) that relate to the broad spectrum of disability issues.
- Help determine the ongoing role and functioning of the reference group.
Membership
The group consists of 8 - 10 people who have been nominated by the disability community and who represent the various disability sectors, namely physical impairment; deaf and hearing impaired; blind and vision impaired; intellectual impairment; mental health; older persons; youth and Maori.
Members should:
- Be people with a disability, family members, advocates/self advocates, or people working in the disability community (personal experience of disability would be an advantage).
- Have knowledge and experience of working with and advocating on disability issues.
- Have skills which contribute to the aims of the group.
- Have the ability to consult effectively with their sector of the disability community.
- Have the ability to understand and represent interests broader than those of a specific disability group or organisation.
- Have proven ability to work co-operatively and positively in a group environment.

Metropolitan Community Advisor for people with disability
This role exists to identify, advise on and respond to the social and community needs of people with disabilities, as this community is a key target group in Christchurch City Council policy. The Community Advisor works both with the various Units within the Council and with the key organisations that work with and provide services and support to people with a disability.
