Ashes burial

Ashes can be interred in existing full burial plots at all City Council cemeteries except the closed cemeteries: Addington, Barbadoes and Rutherford.

Tree and seat overlooking green cemetery grounds with tombstones.

The following cemeteries have specific areas set aside for ashes interment that are independent of full burial plots:

  • Avonhead
  • Memorial Park
  • Yaldhurst
  • Belfast
  • Waimairi
  • Sydenham
  • Ruru Lawn.

Ashes plots can be purchased directly from the Christchurch City Council or through your funeral director.

All interments in Christchurch City Council cemeteries are for perpetuity and cemetery maintenance and upkeep is provided by the Council. All ashes interments must be arranged through the Cemeteries Administrator to ensure details are recorded. This helps with future genealogical searches.

When headstones are required by family, they must be acquired through a Monumental Mason. Headstones of varying sizes can be considered.

For further information on headstones, contact your local member of the New Zealand Master Monumental Masons Association.
