Whitcoulls, 111 Cashel Street

The present Whitcoulls (1906) is on the same site as the 1882 original two-storey building occupied by G. H. Whitcombe and George Tombs, Christchurch booksellers, printers and bookbinders.

Whitcoulls building.

Scope of work
This grant application focused on the seismic upgrading of the building.

The work undertaken involved the temporary stabilisation of the upper floors during the strengthening works; providing structural steel bracing and connections of the façade at the first floor, second floor and roof levels; and strengthening of the lift shaft.

Outcome
The seismic upgrading was completed in 2005.

Efforts to strengthen un-reinforced masonry buildings is of high importance and will reflect on their performance during a moderate earthquake in the South Island.

The Heritage Incentive Fund is part of the strategy to assist owners in protecting the city’s heritage for future generations.
